Oil Cleansing for Beautiful Skin

Updated on September 2, 2015

When I first heard about this method I was a bit taken back by It. Like most people, I thought it would cause me to break out. I was dead wrong! If you actually break down the logic behind it, it makes perfect sense.

If you are like me, when you take off your mascara you use oil to do it. Oil has the ability to really take off mascara rather easily without you having to rub your delicate eye area. Well, that is some of the logic behind oil cleansing. Natural oils have the ability to break up hardened oils on your face, as well as impurities.

Pulling these impurities from your skin, at first, can cause your skin to get worse for the first week. Think of this as the detox period for your skin. After going through that period your skin will gradually get better. If you stick it out for nearly a month your skin will be in better shape than when you first started. You will have no more dry skin, no blackheads and no excess oil.

In the past, I know I have used numerous chemicals on my face without a second thought. In these chemicals were the occasional acne treatment. I knew I had to be more mindful of what I put on my skin for a huge reason. The skin is the largest organ we have. It is a barrier that protects us, but it is also a sponge! This means whatever you put on your skin will be absorbed into your body. When I think about all those chemicals we put on our bodies via lotion, treatments, shampoos, deodorants, and the list goes on, I grew more conscious of the ingredients.

I wish I knew about oil cleansing back then before I put products on my face, wasted money, and got horrible results. Sometimes you don't get what you pay for. Oil cleansing is one of the best methods for treating acne. It is also one of the best anti-aging secrets. It is a proven fact, skin that is more supple is far healthier and younger looking easily.

Have you ever used certain chemicals on your skin, especially for acne prone skin or oily skin, and it dries out your skin? Then afterwards, you are more oily than you were before? This is because the skin compensates for what it is lacking. So therefore, if you have oily skin but you deplete all of the oil, your skin is going to produce a lot to make up for it. So drying chemicals actually make oily skin or acne prone skin even worse.

Fact: Oil dissolves oil. One of the most basic principals of chemistry is that “like dissolves like.” The best way to dissolve a non-polar solvent like sebum/oil, is by using another non-polar solvent similar in composition: Other oils. By using the right oils, you can cleanse your pores of dirt and bacteria naturally, gently and effectively, while replacing the dirty oil with beneficial ones extracted from natural botanicals, vegetables and fruit that heal, protect and nourish your skin. The method for oil cleansing will be different for everyone. There are various oils you can use. Depending upon the composition of your skin, you may want to lean towards certain oils more than others. The percentage you use in your blend can vary as well. That is something you can play with overtime to better tailor your regime for yourself.

I personally use a mix of coconut oil and olive oil. It works perfectly for my skin and gives me that youthful glow. Sometimes I'll even throw some Jojoba oil in there because it is the closest to our own natural oils. Macadamia oil is another great oil to use due to it's fatty acid profile, which makes it another oil that is close to our natural sebum.

Here are some suggestions for your skin care needs. Feel free to use different oils or different percentage of the same oils. The combination is totally up to you and your skin care needs.

Oily Skin : 30% Castor oil, 70% Sunflower Seed Oil
Dry Skin : 90%Sunflower Seed Oil, 10% Castor Oil
Normal/Balanced Skin : 80% Sunflower Seed Oil, 20% Castor Oil

Mix these oils and take about a quarter amount in your hand. Rub your hands together, which will warm the oil, and then massage your face. This will help to remove make-up, dirt and various other impurities from your skin. Deeply massage the oil into your pores for at least a few minutes, maybe longer if you feel you want to saturate your pores even more. I find when you are massaging your face this is the optimal time to relax and do some deep breathing exercises. This will help to induce relaxation, which is also beneficial in skin care and overall health.

Once you are satisfied with how saturated your skin is, you will take a clean towel or washcloth and soak it in warm water. It is important to note that the water should be warm not scalding hot water. You want it warm enough that you can steam your face. You will lay the warm, steaming washcloth on your face until it cools. When it cools you will wipe the oil from your face with it. Make sure to do this gently and repeat this a few times if you need to.

When you are done, if your skins feels tight or dry in any way, you take a drop of the oil you just blended and massage it into your face. Gently rub it into your skin until there is no residue left.
